Pubs, Taverns & Sports Bars

This is our most competitive pricing tier as, properly underwritten, it is a moderately hazardous class of business and, unlike restaurants, has no standard market competition. We refer to accounts meeting certain criteria as “target accounts”; most Pubs, Taverns & Sports Bars, if they are eligible for coverage at all, qualify for “target account” pricing. Those that are not are often still eligible under the program, but at higher pricing.

  • We do not write nightclubs (but some entertainment is permissible).
  • We do not write strip joints (even if you call them gentlemen’s clubs).
  • We do not write casino’s / mini-casinos (but cardrooms, lottery, video poker, etc. are fine).
  • We do not write pool halls, except upscale pool halls, but do write accounts with a limited number of pool tables.
  • We do write dinner theaters.
  • We do write accounts with incidental, premises driven exposures. For example, we write accounts with a limited amount of off-premises catering but do not write caterers, per se.

Other Notes

  • We rarely (but occasionally) exclude or sublimit Assault & Battery from the CGL on pubs, taverns and sports bars. To the contrary, we are usually silent on A&B on the CGL, so there is no need for a sublimit. We do exclude it on the Liquor Liability, however, so as to prevent the stacking of limits.

For additional details about our handling of Assault & Battery, please see the "COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS ABOUT ASSAULT & BATTERY…" half way down the Program Coverages page.
